As a U.S. Army combat veteran and American citizen, I wanted to chime in on this practice. I continue to witness American citizens, foreigners and radicals burning our American flag in protest of one thing or another. Exactly what is that childish practice accomplishing other than negative attention, civil unrest and outing their character?
Literally millions of patriotic Americans gave their last measure of one's being, they were maimed, wounded and disfigured for life. The American Soldier, Sailor, Airman and Marine put themselves in harm's way on your behalf for your 'right' to disrespect our symbol of freedom.
I don't care how disgusted and mad I get with our politicians destroying our Constitution and constitutional freedoms. Our American flag is symbolic of the swimming pools of shed American blood and lives of loved ones lost for the wonderful freedoms we take for granted today.
I am not for a law to make burning the American flag in protest a criminal offense. Even though this disrespectful disgusting practice pains me to my core, someone paid the price of their only life for the right for you to do so. We don't need our government further restricting our freedoms.
With that said: I'm the type of guy that goes out of his way and bends over backwards to avoid confrontations and physical violence. I love my country and I respect your rights as American citizens to protest until the cows come home. However...
If a protest ever erupts in my neighborhood, and our American flag is used as an example of protest and disrespect... I can guarantee I will find out what jail food and a hard bed are like.
We have many avenues available to us to express our grievances and dissatisfaction, and burning our flag in public is not one of them. Disrespecting the symbol of those that fought and died for our country, and patriotic Americans, though yet legal, will not be tolerated in many places, and in my neighborhood in particular.
May God continue to Bless America.
